Mudhumalai means ancient hill and true to its name the hills are 65 million years old.In recognition of its phenomenal bio-diversity with a rich flora and fauna, Mudhumalai forest was declared as a sanctuary in 1927 by the erstwhile rulers and became one of the oldest sanctuaries in India. When biosphere reserves were declared by UNESCO, the area of 321 sq km of Mudumali Wild Life Sanctuary and National Park formed part of the 5500 sq.km, Nilgiris Biosphere Reserves in India.The forest is also home to Tigers, Panthers, Elephants, Deer such as the Sambar, spotted deer, barking deer, mouse deer apart from the Malabar Giant squirrel and the flying squirrel. The flora and fauna of the area offers breathtaking views of the majestic Blue Mountains.
